RTW: Writing Conferences

Click on the logo for information about this week's Road Trip Wednesday, hosted by YA Highway.

I’ve been to the Florida Writer’s Association annual conference and the RWA National Conference in 2010. I also went to Dragon*Con in 2010 and attended most of their sessions for/by writers.

I only had the opportunity to attend RWA thanks to a natural disaster that forced the Convention to move to my hometown. I don’t really write romance, but this conference was incredible. An everyone was impossibly nice and welcoming. For example: On the night of the awards dinner I was fixing my hair in the bathroom mirror and this woman was like “You look beautiful!” When I made it back to my table, she got called on stage and they announced her as a three-time RITA winner! It was a wonderful experience and I definitely recommend it.

This year, my heart yearns to go to SCBWI National, but I can’t make it happen financially. I’ve consoled myself by signing up for the SCBWI FL summer workshop in June and Ascendio 2012′s Quill Track in July.

I’m also hoping to make the YallFest happen for my sister and me in November. (Do I know anyone in Charlotte who’d like to host us??) No, this isn’t a writing conference, but the author list is crazy awesome!

Have you been to any writing conferences? Which ones? Which ones would you like to attend?

I don’t write romance, but if RWA was happening in my hometown, I would be sorely tempted to go. RWA seems to be a draw for agents and established writers, the opportunity to rub shoulders and learn would be hard to pass up just because it’s not my genre.

SCBWI National isn’t in my plans for this year either, but I would love to go there sometime. Maybe someday we’ll be there together and you can compliment my hair in the bathroom :)

Aw, that is such a sweet story! I would love to go to SCBWI but like you can’t afford it :/ Going to do WriteOnCOn and just pretend it counts even though it is online ;)
